How are you at keeping your commitments to you? Do you often push them aside and say yes to someone else’s request or to something else instead?
Yesterday I made a commitment to myself that I would make myself a green smoothie as a reward and celebration for doing a FB live.
Once I completed the video, however, I wanted to keep working. There was an email to write, more posts to create, a video to share. I had a limited amount of time before I had to leave for a meeting. I caught myself wanting to work, work, work until the very last second and forget about the smoothie.
I stopped myself. I reminded myself that I had made a commitment to myself and I needed to honor that commitment. I closed my laptop and headed to the kitchen to create a yummy green beverage. I then took my pup for a quick walk and was out the door in time to make my meeting without rushing.
This may not seem like a big deal but it is. My tendency is always to work, to squeeze in just a little more work and to squeeze out the fun. It is a recipe for burnout.
The other thing it does is it creates distrust in myself. If I can’t count on myself to honor my promises to me, why make them in the first place?
We are often great about honoring our commitments to others. We are not so great at honoring our commitments to ourselves. And it often goes unnoticed.
The thing is we all have a little child inside us that longs for love and play. Think about how you felt when a caregiver or parent made a commitment to you and broke it or how your own children feel when you back out of plans.
It feels pretty awful yet we do it to ourselves all the time.
We commit to working out and then we stay at work longer instead or forgo the gym for happy hour. We commit to eating healthier and then hit the drive-thru on the way home. We commit to creating more quality time with our partner and then we turn on Netflix and zone out.
Our desires and our actions are in conflict. We start to lose our integrity with ourselves. We start to doubt our ability to make the changes we desire. We lose faith in ourselves. This is a slippery slope. If we can’t count on ourselves, who can we count on?
We have to build our trust with ourselves and the best way to do that is to honor your commitments to yourself, no matter how small and insignificant they may seem.
Your word is gold, treat it as such.
What is one commitment you will make to yourself today and honor? No matter what?
