Decisiveness is a skill. How well do you practice that skill?

Do you tend to be a waffler or flip-flopper? Do you claim more often than not that it doesn’t matter where you go, what you do, or what you eat. You like to go with the flow, you say.

Are you afraid to make a decision? Is there some fear around confrontations or conflict? Is your default patter to put other people’s needs and wishes before your own?

I hate to break the news to you but you are not doing anyone any favors. When you choose not to make a decision, you give away your power and you put all the pressure on the other person. If you both decided what you prefer, then you have two options to choose from. If you don’t decide, the other person is left with endless possibilities which actually makes it harder to make a decision.

When I used to teach career education in public high schools, one of my favorite activities was getting students out of their desks and in a line. I would call out two options and students had to choose to stand either left or right of the line depending on their choice. This made it easy to identify their preferences. Chocolate or Vanilla? Truck or Car? Mountains or Beach? It narrows the choices making it easier to choose. It was a powerful lesson.

Some of the most successful fast-casual restaurants owe some of their success to the limitation of options offered. Think of In-n-Out Burger.  They offer cheeseburgers, hamburgers, fries, and shakes. That’s it. And they do it extremely well. Simplicity allows for mastery. And this has resulted in incredible success.

How can you simplify decisions?

  1. Narrow the options.
  2. Choose the first thing – trust your gut instinct – and go with it.
  3. No going back and changing your mind.

Try this for an entire day. Notice how much quicker and easier it is to make a decision. Notice how much less stressful it feels.

Today, give yourself permission to choose exactly what YOU want and stick with it. No wavering. Get off the fence. You’ll feel better and every encounter will be much more enjoyable.

Wishing you fun and ease in decision-making,

Kori
