Take chances, make mistakes. That’s how you grow. Pain nourishes your courage. You have to fail in order to practice being brave.
-Mary Tyler Moore
Last night was the graduation for the participants in my first workshop. Everyone was open, honest, and willing to be vulnerable. The discussion was rich. We had created a sacred space together, a place to share our dreams, our fears, our struggles, and our triumphs. It was beautiful. I felt honored to be a part of this group. I learned so much from this courageous group of doers, dreamers, and risk-takers. There is so much power in surrounding yourself with people who are taking actions to be the best version of themselves they can be.
One of the key take-aways from the workshop was that it is never too late to begin again. One man in the workshop shared some of what he had been through and where he is now. We were discussing the importance of self-knowledge and self-love. He had come to realize the power and importance of taking good care of himself and deeply knowing himself. These are things we can control and that we have a direct influence on as well. At the end of our discussion, he said, “It’s incredible to think I got a second chance at life.” I felt overwhelmed with emotion by his statement.
Sometimes it may feel like this ‘second chance’ is forced us on due to the death of a loved one, a divorce, a job loss or some other significant life event. While these events are life-changing, we get to choose how we want our lives to change because of them. We can choose to become bitter, angry, cynical, and depressed, which are normal responses to such devastations. We can also choose to find the light no matter how dark the world around us has become. We can choose to make our time here on this earth contribute to something bigger precisely because we have seen the abyss of despair.
However, if you haven’t suffered a significant loss in your life, this doesn’t mean you are exempt from a second chance. You don’t have to stay stuck in a job or a life or a relationship that is draining the life out of you. None of us do. Yet many of us believe we can’t leave or it’s too late or a whole host of other reasons. The truth is we all always have a second chance at life. We can choose to believe in ourselves and our dreams no matter what. We can start taking actions that align with being the person we desire to be. We can surround ourselves with people who believe in us and encourage us on our journey.
We have the power to make a change in our lives, no matter what our circumstances.
