Where in your life are you making excuses?
I’m too old, I’m not old enough, I don’t have enough money, I don’t have enough time, I don’t have the right connections, I don’t have the right clothes, and on and on the list goes.
On Monday, it was the first night of the full moon. My yoga studio always offers a full moon meditation class each new full moon. I had meetings and was out all day. The class didn’t start until 8pm. I started my list of excuses why I couldn’t go – I’m hungry, I’m tired, I didn’t bring clothes to change into, I just want to go home and rest. I was slowly talking myself out of it. I received a text from my boyfriend asking about the class. When I had mentioned the class to him earlier that day, he did not seem interested at all so I was surprised he wanted to go now.
I tossed my excuses out the window. I showed up to the class in jeans and a leather jacket, grabbed a meditation cushion and joined the circle. That is always the hardest part – just showing up, no matter what. No one cares what you’re wearing or what story you have going on in your head about why you shouldn’t be there. You are there. That is what matters.
Our lives are made up of our experiences. We are the ones who limit the range of experiences we get to participate in, usually based on some arbitrary reason.
What if we just allowed ourselves to show up and do the things we’ve always wanted to do? How much richer our lives would be and how much more fulfilling!
What are your most common excuses? What if you couldn’t use them for one full day? What would you allow yourself to do and experience?
We aren’t meant to arrive to our graves safely in a well-preserved body nor are we meant to live a life of quiet desperation (- taken from Hunter S. Thompson and Henry D. Thoreau).
The purpose of life is to live it, to taste it, to experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear for newer and richer experience. – Eleanor Roosevelt
We can choose to live our lives fully or we can limit our experience of life.
What do you most want to experience today? What can you do to give yourself that experience?
Rooting for you,
